Visit rural villages Volendam, Marken & Zaanse Schans

Volendam, Marken and Zaanse Schans are three picturesque cultural villages with a touristic character situated in the middle of the “Polder” green

countryside. Volendam and the Island Marken were originally fishing villages with a rich culture. Still inhabited by the Dutch today, some elders still wear

folklore clothing and live in historical houses decorated in typical Volendam style. The Zaanse Schans is a small rural village comprised of old wooden

historical buildings, water channels, farmlands and windmills and is partly an open air museum situated along the Zaan River. Cheese and clog

demonstrations can be seen inside some of the buildings, as well as some souvenirs shops.

A popular day trip is a visit to the traditional fishing villages Volendam and the Island Marken. By luxury touring car you will drive through the “Polder” the

Dutch countryside dominated by green fields, dikes, agriculture, cattle and an occasional windmill. The touring car is equipped with an audio guide in 16

languages that will inform about the sightings and history of the area.

First stop of 45 min will be at the colorful fishing village “Volendam”, a short guided walk through the village will take you to an old cheese factory for a

demonstration. Along the way you will be able to see the villagers in cultural clothing and historical houses. From Volendam harbour you will take a boat ride

of 20 min to the Island Marken. A short guided walk will take you along the traditional houses and harbor for a visit to an old clog factory. After this you will

return by boat to Volendam to continue the journey through the countryside to “Zaanse Schans” famous for its’ old windmills. You will pass by a historical

dock and historical buildings some of which you will be able to enter and will give a great view on life in Holland 17 / 18th century.
